HYDERABAD: Former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's daughter and BRS MLC K Kavithawas arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Friday evening. Amid high drama and slogan-shouting by BRS supporters, she was picked up from her home in Banjara Hills in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
Even as Kavitha was flown to Delhi, a political row broke out over the timing of the arrest - just a day before the Lok Sabha election schedule was to be announced.Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was holding a road show in Malkajgiri, barely 15 km from Kavitha's home.
While the BRS alleged that the arrest was purely political in nature, the Congress claimed that the BJP had handed BRS a lifeline by creating sympathy for Kavitha.
The key allegation against Kavitha is that she was part of what has loosely been called the 'South Lobby'. She has been accused of conspiring with the AAP leaders in Delhi to formulate an excise policy that benefited a select group of companies. She is accused of holding benami investments in Indospirits, the company named in the alleged scam. EDclaims that Rs 100 crore kickbacks were paid and the money was shifted from Hyderabad to Delhi through hawala channels.
