"The Sopranos", also known as "Pilot", is the first episode of the HBOtelevision drama series, The Sopranos, which premiered on January 10, It was written and directed by the series creator and executive producerDavid Chase.
Synopsis
[edit]In the summer of ,[1]New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano, a capo in the DiMeo crime family, is referred to a psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, after having a panic attack. Tony tells Melfi he is a waste management consultant, but she intimates to him that she knows who he actually is. After Melfi establishes what will and will not fall under doctor-patient confidentiality, Tony begins to partly open up.
Tony has recently been dealing with tensions between his wife Carmela and teenage daughter Meadow, as well as trying to keep his impulsive nephew, Christopher Moltisanti, in check. Tony's uncle, Corrado "Junior" Soprano, resents Tony for rising in the family hierarchy while he himself is in decline.
Tony also has a strained relationship with his mother, Livia, who is resisting his advice to move into a retirement home. A confrontation with Livia triggers another panic attack, causing Tony to return to Melfi. He tells her about a family o

A&E is placing a $ million bet - and perhaps its future - on Tony Soprano's broad back.
The basic cable channel's recent purchase of rights to telecast edited versions of HBO's "The Sopranos" for a record-shattering $ million per episode is the new year's most significant television deal. The reruns will start in fall
A rights deal for another one of HBO's crown jewels, "Sex and the City," has worked out well for TBS. But the price tag for "The Sopranos" has left many television executives wondering how A&E can possibly profit.
Court TV General Manager Marc Juris, who was outbid for the show, likened the deal to building a 10,square-foot mansion in a run-down neighborhood: "You will definitely impress a lot of the neighbors and make a lot of noise, but I don't think you'll get your money out of it."
A&E is staring down the naysayers.
"We don't do anything that doesn't make money," said Bob DeBitetto, A&E programming chief, "especially talking about that level of investment."
A&E is clearly in transition, although DeBitetto helped stop a long-term decline. Average viewership sank from , in to , in but rose slightly to , last year, according to Nielsen Media Research.
