    I am an assistant professor of modern Persian literature and culture in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. Prior to joining UBC in 2018, I was a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Postdoctoral Fellow (2017-2018 [awarded for the duration of 2017–2019]) in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto, where I advanced an ongoing monograph project on humor in Iran under the advisorship of Iran historian Mohamad Tavakoli-Targhi. Alongside other research projects, I am currently completing that monograph on the role of humor as a signifier for affect within the discourses of Iranian modernity and nationalism. It is tentatively titled "Satiric Modernity: Humor, Affect, and Nationalism in Iran." Specifically, my project, which emphasizes history of emotions, focuses on the intersections of humor--and a range of related emotions including embarrassment, shame, and humiliation--with gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity in modern Iranian history, literature, and culture. I am also co-editing a volume on "Persianate Literatures as World Literature."

    I obtained my doctoral degree in Comparative Literature from University of Alberta in 2015.
