In his series of Mylar satellites, Paglen applies advanced engineering to the creation of non-functional objects, stripping technology of its intended purpose and hoping to launch his own time capsule of photographs into geostationary orbit. Tracing the ways in which the convergence of aesthetics, industrial design, and politics influence how we see and understand the world, he shows us images of the American West, originally photographed for military use and now considered examples of classic photography. In this talk, artist Trevor Paglen will take us through the hidden histories and mechanics of these technologies, revealing lesser-known tales from the annals of AI research.
The story of a Cold War AI expert employed by the CIA to pioneer facial recognition, a heart-wrenching series of experiments on kittens that gave rise to a strange theory of vision, and a controversial university initiative to categorize all objects that spiraled into a cruel nightmare, the stories illustrate the multifaceted impacts of these advancements.
Through this journey, we will ask a series of fundamental questions: In an age of AI, what constitutes an image? How do we and our technological counterparts interpret it? And crucially, how do these technological shifts influence the fabric of our culture, politics, and everyday life?
