Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music
THE WRITING:
Sheffield’s book is filled with grammatical mistakes, stilted syntax, and topical jump-cuts. Most frustratingly, though, is his tendency to insert random tidbits whether they be personal anecdotes or statements about Taylor and her career that serve no real purpose.
Example:
Chapter 13 is a list of songs that Taylor has mentioned in passing or is, in Sheffield’s mind, loosely connected to Taylor. It’s meant to show us how these artists have inspired Taylor, but the connections are weak. This chapter is supposed to act as a side quest, much like the bridge of a song. As the unwieldy title infers, it’s organized into broad subject categories, each containing poems, stories, novel excerpts, some nonfiction, and snippets from the magazine’s long-running series of interviews, “The Art of Fiction,” which Plimpton describes as “a DNA of literature.” While some contributors are relative newcomers, like the poet Rachel Wetzsteon and short-story author Daniel Libman, most are enduring figures in letters, ranging from Robert Stone, John Updike, and V.S. Naipaul to Allen Ginsberg, Ted Hughes, and Susan Sontag. Veterans like Raymond Carver and Bobbie Ann Mason appear alongside such current trendsetters as David Foster Wallace and Jonathan Lethem; elsew
