  • In our daily devotions this week, my wife and I have been reading the Book of Daniel. After reading Chapter 3, it occurred to me that for some reason we have a tendency to turn the gifts God gives us into idols. This is what King Nebuchadnezzar did in Daniel 3. In the previous chapter, God gave him a dream about a statue that only Daniel could interpret. The dream was a prophecy about the future kingdoms of the world. The head of the statue was made of gold and Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that this head of gold represented Nebuchadnezzar’s own kingdom.

So what does Nebuchadnezzar do? In the very next chapter we are told that he apparently took this dream very literally and had a HUGE gold statue made of himself. This statue was so big it was about 90 feet tall and 9 feet wide.

Now that is a LOT of gold. Not only that, he also required everyone to bow down and worship it whenever they heard music, or be thrown into the fiery furnace.

This led me to ask a few questions: In our own lives and in our faith, have we turned any of God gifts into idols? A good question for us to ponder.

As we turned to Chapter 3 in the Book of Daniel, it has been seventeen years since Arioch, the captain of the Babylonian guard, has brought Daniel into the presence of the king so that Daniel might tell the king the troublesome dreams and their interpretation.
The king after hearing Daniel tell him the dreams and theirs interpretation fell down at the feet of Daniel, and said this: “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a reveler of secrets since you could reveal this dream.”
I want to call your attention to one part of what the king said: “the Lord of kings.” What is Nebuchadnezzar’s role in Babylon? He is the King of Babylon. So, you hear what the king is saying. Daniel’s God is over me.
Do you know what we say as Christians? Our Lord is over us.
But seventeen years have passed and as we enter Chapter Three, Nebuchadnezzar is not any longer acknowledging that Daniel’s God is over him. It maybe so much time has passed, and things have gone on like they always have gone on in his kingdom that he has grow dull to what God had said to him, or he might be in just total disobedience. He has not forgotten what God’s says but he don’t care. That’s total disobedience.
